The world`s widely used metric system is based on the Internatioanl System of Units (or SI). As it looked today it was adopted in 1960 at the XIth General Conference on Weights and Measures (some amendments were made at the XIVth General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1971).
There are seven basic units including a unit of length — metre, a unit of mass — kilogram, a unit of time — second, a unit of electric current — ampere. There are also derivative units. For example, a square metre is a unit of square and if a metre is divided by a time it is a unit of speed.
But there are also other systems of measurement, for example, the British system. Despite some drawbacks it is ofthen used now. For example, TV screen diagonal is usually measured by inches, oil volume — by barrels and people want to know what a gallon of petrol means; is it much or little? To find out it peopel will face the problem of conversion one unit into another. Service ”Measure” is aimed to cope with this problem.
